The Shire of Manjimup has been recognised and congratulated by Dementia Australia for its role in “working towards dementia friendly”
An action plan developed by the Shire of Manjimup demonstrates that the Dementia Friendly Team have had meaningful and regular consultation of people living with dementia and carers in the age friendly and inclusion plans as well as the design of the Wellness and Respite Community Centre since 2016.
The Shire of Manjimup achieved a significant milestone in 2017 in being the first Local Government in Australia to be presented with an Alzheimer's WA Certificate of Commitment. The Certificate recognises the Shire's commitment to being a Dementia Friendly Community. In partnership with Alzheimer's WA the Shire has implemented a specific set of principles designed to meet the criteria of a Dementia Friendly Community.
A Dementia Friendly Community is one where people living with dementia are empowered to have high aspirations and feel confident, knowing they can contribute and participate in activities that are meaningful to them. We all have a part to play in working towards becoming dementia friendly. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved, if you are living with dementia, as a community group, carer, or business.
