MEDIA RELEASE - Funding announced for nine new mobile towers
June 2015
The Shire of Manjimup is set to benefit significantly from the State Government's announcement of the most substantial increase in mobile network coverage that Western Australia has seen since the inception of this form of communication. The Federal Government's Mobile Black Spot program has been teamed with the Western Australian Government's Regional Mobile Communications Project, another Royalties for Regions initiative, to jointly fund 109 of 130 new or upgraded mobile towers, nine of which are located within the Shire of Manjimup.
The locations of the new towers are as follows:
- South Western Hwy between Broke Inlet and Walpole
- Mt Pingerup
- Mt Frankland West
- Windy Harbour
- Mt Burnside
- Crowea
- Vasse Hwy, Collins
- Beedelup East
- Eastbourne Road, Diamond Tree
"Given the size of our Shire and the distances that are travelled through heavily forested areas, it is heartening that both state and federal governments are investing in closing in the black holes that we have in telecommunications," said Shire President Wade DeCampo. "This is fantastic news for us and comes as a result of the Shire and our community taking part in the consultation process conducted by the Federal Government in 2013/14, to determine the mobile blackspots that exist across Australia," said Shire President Wade DeCampo.
"We have seen and experienced in February of this year that it is vitally important to have adequate mobile coverage during an emergency or natural disaster, but it is not just during these trying times that this need arises. It is crucial to our future growth on an economic basis, and on a global scale, that our residents and the travelling public are able to stay connected."
"Our beautiful and serene Shire has received funding in both the vastly forested areas and the coastal hamlets such as Windy Harbour, which has now been acknowledged as the only access point for emergency services, during a rescue operation, between Augusta and Walpole. The future has caught up with us."
