MEDIA RELEASE - Growing Science strikes again
August 2015
The Growing Science Forum is coming to the region again, as part of the Royalties for Regions funded Southern Forests SEED program, on Friday 21 August 2015. SEED patron Professor Lyn Beazley AO FTSE will be joined by celebrity scientists Dr Karl Kruszelnicki and Dr Chris Smith (the naked scientist), as well as a newcomer to the science forum -Professor Andy Whiteley from the University of Western Australia.
Schools from the region are given an allocation of tickets to bring students, from year seven upwards, along for the experience. "For the second year running, we've got these high profile science specialists here to give our school students insight into the wonders of Science and how closely it relates to the world of agriculture," said Shire President Wade DeCampo.
Joining the already impressive line-up of 2014 is Professor Andy Whiteley from the University of Western Australia (UWA). Professor Whiteley hails from the UK, where he helped map the bacterial ecosystems of British soil in a world-first study. He is leading a team of experts from UWA in soil rehabilitation, looking at innovative ways to rehabilitate the land and increase agricultural production. "Prof. Whiteley is the perfect fit for this forum and will provide a different perspective, as well as valuable experiences, as to why science is so important in the evolving spectrum of agriculture related careers," said Cr DeCampo.
The venue for the forum is the Town Hall and a full house is predicted, yet again. "Last year the event was booked out well in advance, so I strongly advise people to book sooner rather than later," Cr DeCampo added. Tickets can be reserved online by visiting the 'Coming Events' section on the Shire of Manjimup homepage- www.manjimup.wa.gov.au, or www.trybooking.com/IMUM.
