MEDIA RELEASE - Heritage icon tributes our diverse and connected region
November 2015
The Shire of Manjimup has unveiled the fifth heritage icon in a series that are featured in key locations across the shire.Titled the Butter Factory, this icon is a celebration of our diverse region which remains connected through industry.
"Like all of the other icons, the butter factory does not just represent the person in the image, in this case, the one who was responsible for loading and unloading the milk and cream. It represents everyone involved across a number of industries - from the herders, to the dairy farmers, to the truck drivers and the factory workers - including their families and lineage," said Cr DeCampo.
Public were invited to attend the unveiling of the Butter Factory icon, which has been placed adjacent to the three palm trees on Ralston Road, Manjimup. Though the original butter factory building has been demolished, the site is of significance as the then manager planted the three palm trees in 1929 to commemorate the Centenary of Western Australia.
Shire President Wade DeCampo said that the aim of the heritage trail of icons is to preserve our local stories, creating a sense of place and "highlighting the connections that have existed through time between each of our communities, in art and via the narrative that features on the interpretive panel of each icon."
Local artist Tony Windberg has collaborated with the Shire on the creation of each icon, which are all made using the same artistic style, each with input from community members who have retold the stories that relate to the pictures.
"Hard work, perseverance and stoicism are present in the themes behind all of the icons; durable communities that stick together and grow stronger across the ages."
"Each icon shows somebody at work and depicts the qualities demonstrated by the Shire's forbearers - qualities that we can all aspire to: perseverance, innovation and resilience," said Cr DeCampo.
