MEDIA RELEASE - Illegal clearing along Walpole foreshore
June 2015
A random inspection conducted by Shire of Manjimup officers today has identified approximately one hectare of land, along Walpole foreshore, that has been cleared illegally. This matter is now under investigation and may lead to prosecution of those involved.
The clearing took place on Shire of Manjimup land without any approvals. Evidence reveals that the work to fell the trees was conducted approximately two to three weeks ago, ie around mid-late May 2015.
Shire President Wade DeCampo expressed his disappointment at the illegal act, saying "our public asset has been destroyed."
"Not only is the foreshore area home to native fauna, it is reserved for all of the community to enjoy, not for someone to destroy for their own personal reasons," said Cr DeCampo.
The correct procedure for the clearing of land requires planning approval to be sought from the Shire of Manjimup.
The next steps for the Shire include a full investigation involving the Department of Parks and Wildlife and WA Police. Anybody with information is encouraged to contact WA Police in Walpole on 9840 1618.
