The Local Government Election of 2015 is fast approaching, with nominations for the vacated Councillor positions opening for eight days from 3 September 2015 until 10 September 2015.
Shire President Wade DeCampo thanked the Councillors whose term is expiring for their commitment and effort during their time as Councillors. "Whether Cr Daubney, Cr Karamfiles, Cr Jenkins, Cr Chodorowski and Cr Bavich will be renominating or not, their time in the Council Chamber and representing the community has been invaluable and I personally am very grateful for their contribution."
Five positions are open for nomination - three in the Central ward, one in the West ward and one in the North ward.
The Department of Local Government's outline of the role of a Councillor is as follows:
- represents the interests of electors, ratepayers and residents of the district;
- provides leadership and guidance to the community in the district;
- facilitates communication between the community and the council;
- participates in the local government's decision-making processes at council and committee meetings; and
- performs such other functions as are given to a councillor by the Local Government Act 1992 or any other written law.
In order to be eligible to nominate for Council, candidates must be at least 18 years of age, be an elector of the district and not be disqualified. To nominate, candidates are required to lodge the following with the Returning Officer (Andrew Campbell, Chief Executive Officer) prior to 4pm on Thursday 10 October 2015:
- A signed and witnessed 'Nomination for Election by Candidate' form available at the Shire of Manjimup or via www.manjimup.wa.gov.au;
- A 'Candidate Profile' limited to one A4 page of 150 words; and
- A 'Nomination Bond' of $80. The election will be held on Saturday 17 October. People who are unable to attend a polling booth on the day can vote early in person, absentee vote at any other Western Australian Local Government or complete a postal vote.
