Pemberton to hit the big screen
MEDIA RELEASE - Pemberton to hit the big screen
October 2015
A star-studded cast has been confirmed for the Western Australian feature film Jasper Jones, for which Pemberton has been chosen as the primary production location. Craig Silvey, author of the book Jasper Jones which has been adapted for the screen, posted on social media yesterday announcing that renowned Australian actors Hugo Weaving (The Matrix trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit), Toni Colette (Muriel's Wedding, The Sixth Sense), Dan Wyllie and Matt Nable will be joined by upcoming talent Levi Miller, Aaron McGrath and Angourie Rice.
The story is set in the South West during the 1960s, making Pemberton the ideal location due to the history and authenticity of the buildings and streets within the town, as well as the environmental backdrop of the forest and waterways found on the outskirts.
"The producers spent a lot of time visiting other towns in the south-west and found that Pemberton had everything that was required for their scenes, which for them, means that they can base the production crew and actors in one spot rather than having to move location," explained Shire President Wade DeCampo.
Cr DeCampo explained how the cast and crew will be accommodated locally and several other local businesses will be engaged to assist with ancillary services such as construction and catering. "It is bringing economy to the region and in the long run will assist us with boosting our tourism profile - Broome had Bran Nue Dae, Margaret River had Drift and now Pemberton and the South West will be put on the map with Jasper Jones.".
Set design and build will be commencing in late October and filming will start soon after. Between 28 October 2015 and the end of November, some roads in and around Pemberton will be blocked to allow adequate buffer zones for filming. "Traffic management will be in place to provide redirections during filming, and there will also be the opportunity for people to watch the filming take place or even get a spot as an extra or on the support crew," added Cr DeCampo.
"It is such an exciting time for Pemberton and the Shire and I can't wait to see the action first hand, not to mention the finished product on the big screen," said Cr DeCampo.
