MEDIA RELEASE - Students get inspired by local ag specialists
May 2015
The Royalties for Regions funded Southern Forests SEED Program, which is a part of the overall SuperTowns initiative, is hosting its biggest Ag Inspirations program for high school students from the region. A total of 61 students, who were required to submit an expression of interest in order to take part in Ag Inspirations, will gain first hand insight and knowledge from local agriculture specialists.
The four-day program which spans across three weeks is the third of its kind, this time hosting students from six high schools - Manjimup Senior High School, Pemberton District High School, Northcliffe District High School, Kearnan College, Nannup District High School and Bridgetown District High School.
Shire President Wade DeCampo explained "the range of agriculture based career options which are available in this region are both plentiful and diverse."
"SEED Program Coordinator for the Shire of Manjimup, Stephanie Carstairs, has put together a program that encompasses several options that are out there for local young people." Students have been divided into two groups, with the days' programs tailored according to what their particular areas of interest are.
Ag Inspirations 2015 will see students learning about things from food production and processing, to herd management and horticultural agronomy. Cr DeCampo went on to talk about how this year's program differs to the last two which ran in 2014. "Forest Products Commission will be hosting students this year, which will demonstrate how broad opportunities can become with an agriculture background - skills and knowledge gained in agriculture are easily transferrable into other areas such as forestry and silviculture," said Cr DeCampo.
The Ag Inspirations program commenced on Thursday 21 May and concludes on Friday 5 June.
