Now that summer is officially over, what better time than now, to reminisce over all the great things that happened at the Manjin Rec Plaza.
The local skate park youth were lucky enough to meet Todd Meyn from Nitro Circus who dropped in and spent a few hours at the Rec Plaza. Todd said "we are so lucky to have such a great skate park" and stated he enjoyed the flow of the street area and the challenge of the bowl. He vowed to be back with more riders!
Mia and Meika, two fearless skateboarding sisters, have travelled to over 200 skate parks in Western Australian while filming their own YouTube channel. The girls created a wicked video of the Rec Plaza (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peg2_dDxfOo) highlighting how lucky our town is to have such a great facility.
The Rec Plaza features visiting talent but more importantly showcases local talent on a daily basis. Often the Shire's Rec Plaza Officer bears witness to amazing feats such as a four-year-old drop into the bowl, or a youth doing backflips out of the bowl. Many of these tricks require admirable determination, and gumption.
Manjin Rec Plaza Officer Maegen Campbell is responsible for supervision of the Rec Plaza, and ensuring where possible that all participants and spectators are safe. Maegen manages any complaints and aims to deal with them promptly and courteously. Maegan is dedicated to ensuring the Manjin Rec Plaza is a safe space for all and is passionate about activating and engaging the Shire's youth in this space. "The Rec Plaza is not just about skating" Maegen says, "It's a vital place for our youth to gather in our community."
"We have run a number of excellent competitions that would not have been possible without prize donations from local businesses" Maegan says, "We would like to thank the following supporters for their generous assistance over the summer season: Manjimup Regional Aqua Centre, Manjimup Speedway, Steve's Menswear and Manjimup Toy World."
The Shire reminds our community that Maegan is onsite 7 hours per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays 4-5pm and Saturdays and Sundays (weather dependent) until mid May. Her presence and activities aim to prevent anti-social behaviour and make the Manjin Rec Plaza an inviting environment for all. Drop in and say hi to Maegan and talk to her about how the community can work towards ensuring the Manjin Rec Plaza is safe, inclusive and enjoyable.
Shire President Paul Omodei added "This is a central space for young people. It is important we all work together to ensure all can enjoy and share this space respectfully."
