MEDIA RELEASE - Tourism in the spotlight
September 2015
The Shire of Manjimup, as a part of the Warren Blackwood Strategic Alliance, is moving forward with the implementation of a Sub-regional Tourism Organisation (SRTO) to build the region's brand and reputation as a tourist destination of choice. The project kicks off with a networking and information session on 24 September from 10am - 1pm at the Truffle and Wine Co in Manjimup.
Shire President Wade DeCampo explained how important it is for people in the industry, and other interested community members, to attend the session to provide insight into the local tourism sector. "We want to identify what it is that the SRTO needs to focus on. What are the critical issues surrounding local tourism and what are peoples' suggestions as to how can we can really put our region on the map"
"Attendees will also be provided an update on how the initiative has progressed thus far, including information on the consultant, and the steps they will take to develop a sustainable model for the SRTO."
The initiative to investigate the formation of an SRTO is the top priority of an action plan that was developed following a Tourism Forum held in 2013, which attracted 120 stakeholders. In February 2014 a sub-committee made up of Local Government and industry representatives was formed to undertake the project. Funds were secured from the Alliance and the Shires of Manjimup, Bridgetown-Greenbushes and Nannup. The South West Development Commission and Regional Development Australia South West are also providing financial support and a grant application has been submitted for further funding through the 'Friends of the South West Community'.
Cr DeCampo is encouraging the community to 'jump on board now'. "This is an incredible opportunity to have your say and work together to watch your region's tourism sector grow - get involved sooner rather than later. Working together."
The cost to attend the Networking and Information Session is $30 per person with a light lunch provided. It will be held on 24 September from 10am - 1pm at the Truffle and Wine Co, Seven Day Road, Manjimup.
