The WA Quilters Association’s biennial quilting exhibition, Stitched and Bound, highlights the innovative and diverse array of work produced by Western Australian textile artists.
The exhibition features 48 works by 44 artists, selected for their merit, innovation, design and execution. Artists were encouraged to push the boundaries of the traditional quilting format, focusing on personal statements through unconventional materials and ideas. The result is a stunning variety of styles, techniques and themes conveying deep, personal stories and experiences. The quilts in this exhibition are a collection of sumptuous and complex works of art.
Quilting boasts a long and storied history, dating back to ancient Egypt. Throughout the ages, quilts have served as utilitarian pieces for protection, warmth and storytelling. Nowadays, they are highly valued for their decorative beauty and personal significance. Despite the evolution from function to decorative art and treasured personal items, one aspect remains unchanged: the social importance of quilters coming together as a community.
Stitched and Bound continues these traditions. The exhibition’s varied textures and themes will inspire viewers while it celebrates the creativity, craftsmanship and community of the Western Australian quilting community.
Stitched and Bound will be on display at the Manjimup Art Gallery from 5 April until 10 May 2025.
