Sustainability
The Shire of Manjimup, as a community and as an organisation, is blessed with superb quality agricultural lands, forests and parklands with magnificent trees and stunning coastline. The natural environment provides economic and recreational benefits which the Shire will endeavour to sustain into the future.
Sustainability is defined by the World Commission on Environment and Development as: "forms of progress that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs."
The Shire of Manjimup's Environmental Management and Sustainability Strategy 2013 sets out the means to achieve the following objectives;
| 1. | Guide Council in: a) adapting infrastructure to improve energy efficiency and to better conserve or reuse water; b) raising community awareness of, and engagement in, our environmental management; c) applying land use, subdivision and development controls in a way which provides for a balanced approach to conservation of biodiversity and the maintenance of natural environmental values in new developments; d) encouraging and providing recycling opportunities and improving use of recyclable products; e) maintaining a fuel hazard reduction program for Council managed reserves; f) rehabilitating degraded Council managed reserves in order to improve biodiversity; and g) promoting a consideration of renewable energy alternatives so as to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. |
| 2. | Guide Council in its communications with residents and communities of the Shire about its work by providing clear and useful explanations of the direction Council is taking to manage the natural environment of the Shire of Manjimup. |
| 3. | Guide Council in exploring how best to respond to the needs of the residents and communities of the Shire of Manjimup, as they express their concerns for climate change, environmental and sustainability issues which continue to emerge and develop in the personal, local and global collective consciences. |
| 4. | Provide access to and clarity around the various policies which guide Council in specific aspects of environmental management. |
| 5. | Be a document which is accessible to all - Council, its officers, and the residents of the Shire - and which provides clarity and direction in dealing with issues impacting on biodiversity and natural resources at local, regional and global levels. |
