Northcliffe to host the annual youth week celebration
MEDIA RELEASE - Northcliffe to host the annual youth week celebration
April 2017
The annual free Youth Week event is taking place in Northcliffe this year to tie into the national, week-long celebration that is being promoted from 31 March 2017 - 9 April 2017.Activities kick-off at 11am on Saturday, 8 April at the Skate Park on Zamia Street in Northcliffe and conclude around 4pm.
The free youth festival, which is organised by the Shire of Manjimup Youth Network, has been working its way around different towns over the last three years. Celebrations have already taking place in Pemberton, Walpole, Quinninup, with Northcliffe being the feature town for 2017. "One third of our local population is classified as youth, which is the age group of 12 -25 year olds. They are our future and this event is about engaging them, as well as acknowledging, appreciating and celebrating the valuable contribution they make in all of our communities," said Shire President Paul Omodei.
Activities include bubble soccer, a dunk tank, tie dying and rock climbing, with one of the biggest drawcards sure to be the local musical acts and the 'Flaming Idiots Circus', who will be providing entertainment for the crowd throughout the day. Local youth have been heavily involved in the planning of the event, including identifying the types of activities that will take place on the day and making decisions about the logistics, such as the type of food that they will be preparing and providing at the event.
Cr Omodei congratulated Manjimup Senior High School year nine students Hannah, Casey and Bonnie, who won the poster competition which has seen their design used to promote the event throughout the Shire and included as an advertisement in various local publications. "The aim is to send a very clear message to local kids and young adults - you are important and you make a valuable contribution; we want you to learn new skills, meet new people, set yourselves up for the future and keep you engaged in the community," said Cr Omodei.
The day is a totally free event for youth, including the food, workshops to the bus transport that is being provided to Northcliffe from Manjimup, Pemberton and Walpole. People are asked to reserve their place on the bus by calling Sharon Wilkinson at the Shire of Manjimup on 9771 7777 before 3 April.
