The Shire of Manjimup has introduced the Beach Emergency Numbers (BEN) signs system to improve emergency response times by installing signs with unique codes at beach access points across the Shire of Manjimup.
The Beach Emergency Numbers (BEN) signs program is a coding system created with a unique prefix and has been integrated into CAD systems used by emergency services. These signs provide specific location information which is vital when emergency services are deployed.
Location of Beach Emergency Numbers (BEN) Signs are available on the shark smart website at the links below:

These signs were introduced and funded by the State Government in honour of Ben Gerring, who suffered a fatal shark attack near Mandurah in 2016, and have recently been installed by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and the Shire of Manjimup.
Shire President Paul Omodei encouraged beach users to become familiar with the BEN Signs and take note (or a photo) of the unique code on the beach access point they use. In the case of an emergency, this will assist emergency services to identify the location after quoting the unique reference code.
In the event of an emergency, dial 000 and quote the unique code and specific location information. Where possible, the caller should wait at the beach access point until emergency service crews arrive.
BEN Signs may also be referred to when reporting shark sightings to Water Police on 9442 8600. This will enable relevant local authorities to act quickly and implement beach closures with accurate beach location information.
Download the Emergency app for back up when BEN Signs aren't suitable. The app uses the GPS functionality built into smart phones to provide location information including GPS coordinates and street address, which assists in an emergency.
