Council clarifies stance on Irrigation Scheme
The Shire of Manjimup has today further clarified its stance on the Southern Forest Irrigation Scheme, ensuring support for private farmers gaining access to water for agricultural purposes in the Donnelly Catchment.
The Southern Forest Irrigation Scheme project came before Council on 21 March 2019 seeking support for an Application for Funding from the Federal Government. Council's decision, reflected within resolution 27764, reflects that Council support of the Southern Forrest Irrigation Scheme project is subject to the following:
- the applicants obtaining all required environmental approvals;
- approvals being obtained to modify the existing bed and banks of the Donnelly River;
- a license to take water being granted for the project; and
- the water allocated to the Southern Forest Irrigation Scheme, being in addition to the water allocation for private use in the Donnelly Catchment.
Two out of 11 Councillors voted against the decision.
"The decision to 'Clarify' is to ensure that the community is aware of Councils Policy on the matter taken months ago and is consistent with the Shire of Manjimup's position contained in its Strategic Plan".
"We are talking about a $100 million plus project with a 160 hectare dam generating much needed jobs" Mr Omodei said.
"Misleading information contained in the Petition lodged in Parliament will be clarified by the Parliament", he said.
