MEDIA RELEASE - Free seminars to update licensees or liquor laws
June 2016
Two free seminars took place in Manjimup and Pemberton last week to provide local liquor licensees with an update on the liquor laws that govern the sale, supply and consumption of liquor in WA.Over 40 licensees attended the presentations, which were a joint initiative of the Southern Forests Liquor Accord, the Department of Racing Gaming and Liquor and the South West Liquor Enforcement Unit.
The Southern Forests Liquor Accord has been established by the Shire of Manjimup's Southern Forests Alcohol Think Again project, which aims to prevent alcohol and other drug related harm across the Shire.
The presentations were conducted by Steve Spallarossa from the Department of Racing, Gaming and Liquor. Topics covered included selling and supplying liquor in accordance with licence conditions and liquor legislation, obligations and responsibilities as a licensee and approved manager, sections of the liquor legislation that are not well known and the ramifications if something goes wrong.
Shire President Wade DeCampo outlined how important it is for licensees to participate in these free information seminars as they arise, saying "the need was identified by the accord which is made up of licensees, because laws are always changing and evolving, so the more informed they are the better."
Senior Constable Tony Strang from the South West Liquor Enforcement Unit also provided a briefing on compliance issues from a WA Police perspective.
A number of additional seminars will be organised for the community over coming months and publicised closer to the date. "Liquor licensing affects us all, be it directly or indirectly - as parents and guardians, as local businesses and as community members. Keeping up to date with the liquor licensing laws is another way for us to go about combatting some forms of alcohol abuse in the community," said Cr DeCampo.
