The Shire of Manjimup is an entrant in the 2019 Keep Australia Beautiful WA Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Awards Litter Prevention and Waste Management category, which recognises innovation and achievements in litter prevention, reducing and managing waste.
Shire President Paul Omodei said that entry in the Litter Prevention and Waste Management category was a "natural fit" for the Shire.
"From our farmlands, through our Southern Forests and out to our breathtaking coastline, Shire people love their landscape and want to do their bit to protect it from the wastes we inevitably generate along the way. It's in our nature."
"Of course we have the minority who litter," Cr Omodei said. "But we work together to minimise their impact. Most of us are fiercely protective of our natural environment."
Cr Omodei said that the Shire's focus in waste management was on minimisation, diversion to recycling, and pursuing best-practice landfill management.
"Waste management is fundamentally environmental management," Cr Omodei said, "and we're proud of our landfill and its good environmental record."
"The really great thing is that so many people across the Shire are doing their bit. We have farmers finding alternative targets for their excess produce; we have schools keeping chooks and worm farms. We have individuals and groups out along the highways picking up litter. We even have restaurants recycling everything they can, right down to their used cooking oil!"
"Our Shire is truly rich in natural beauty and our people are taking action to protect that value. It's in our nature."
