Liquor accord pushes secondary supply message
MEDIA RELEASE - Liquor Accord pushes secondary supply message
November 2016
The Southern Forests Liquor Accord are campaigning to raise awareness of the ramifications of supplying alcohol to minors.
It is against the law to provide alcohol to anybody under 18 years of age. This law applies in both public and private settings. As part of the Southern Forests Liquor Accord campaign, bottle shop licensees will place stickers on alcoholic beverages, with a message that says 'If you supply alcohol to an under 18 year old you can be fined up to $10,000'.
Shire President Wade DeCampo said research has shown that alcohol can cause harm to a young person's developing brain as well as increase their risk of developing mental health issues and social problems.
The campaign to raise awareness of the secondary supply laws will coincide with Leavers Week 2016 which is the celebratory period of three to five days at the completion of Year 12 in WA, where students often travel to various locations to celebrate with their peers.
"Leavers provides a timely opportunity to remind our community members of the secondary supply laws and that they apply regardless of whether their children are of school leaver age or where students go to celebrate," said Cr DeCampo.
The Southern Forests Liquor Accord was established as a voluntary agreement between licensees, police and the Shire to develop safe and well-managed environments in and around licensed premises.
