Opportunity to have your say on the backpacker tax'
MEDIA RELEASE - Opportunity to have your say on the 'backpacker tax'
August 2016
The Federal Government is seeking submissions from the public regarding the changes to the 'backpacker tax', which would see the international 'holiday maker' workforce taxed at 32.5% from the first dollar they earn. People with concerns and ideas, particularly those who have a demand for the itinerant workforce in their industry, have until Friday, September 2 to submit their comments.
In late May 2016, a community forum was convened to address this topic, with representation from Member for O'Connor Rick Wilson MP, Member for Forrest Nola Marino MP and Senator Chris Back. Almost 50 people attended the forum representing the agricultural and tourism industries, as well as local business.
Shire President Wade DeCampo said that it was evident by the turn out at the forum that this is an important issue across the State and in many sectors. "The negative effects of the potential changes to the backpacker tax, that may become a deterrent for overseas workers who 'fill the gaps' in employment for several industries, would be far-reaching and long-term," said Cr DeCampo.
The review consultant is urging individuals and organisations to provide specific examples and/or case studies. "This is the last opportunity that we, as a growing and diverse community, have to put our cases forward. I strongly urge you to utilise this public consultation process. You've got nothing to lose by having your say and it is unlikely that there will be another chance to," added Cr DeCampo.
"I've heard several different perspectives, all as valid and important as each other; but this information needs to go 'higher-up' and at this stage, the way to do it is through this process."
Following the review, a submission will be prepared for Federal Cabinet to consider when making a decision about the implementation of the proposed changes, which are due to come into effect on January 1, 2017.
Public submissions can be made via an online portal available via www.agriculture.gov.au/workingholidaymaker where there is also additional information regarding the tax and indicative time frames.
