Our Patch, Our Planet
MEDIA RELEASE - Our Patch, Our Planet
June 2016
Our patch is a very productive part of Australia. However, with production comes consumption, and with consumption comes waste. Manjimup Shire Council is committed to the proper management of waste generated in the Shire so that we can continue to be the productive - and beautiful - region that we are.
The Manjimup Recycling and Refuse Centre and transfer stations at Northcliffe, Pemberton and Walpole operate to the high standards required by the Department of Environment Regulation.
These sites also provide opportunity for those depositing waste to separate it into various streams of reusable or recyclable materials. Shire President Cr Wade DeCampo encouraged all residents to ensure their waste is directed, where possible, into the appropriate recycling stream.
This minimises the volume of waste going to landfill and also serves to screen out the various materials which pose a risk of polluting our environment, Cr DeCampo said. On the other hand, many of these materials are of value for re-use in various manufacturing industries, so recycling them is a great way to reduce resource use on a broader scale.
Apart from the everyday household items like bottles, cans and newspapers, householders can make sure more substantial items like used batteries, car tyres, cooking oil and even mattresses are not sent to landfill but directed to a recycling destination.
All residents of the Shire can do their bit on their own patch to help protect our planet from the problems of too much waste, Cr DeCampo said.
