MEDIA RELEASE - Pemberton hosts Australia Day 2015
January 2015
The annual Australia Day celebrations, hosted by the Shire of Manjimup, will this year take place at the Pemberton Pool in Pemberton. The town is putting on the festivities in full force, with the weekend jam-packed with things to see and do.
The Australia Day long-weekend kicks off with the Subaru National Mountain Bike Race on the exceptional mountain bike trails that Pemberton offers. "Pemberton has etched its place into mountain biking fame, offering trails that are of national significance with experiences available for beginners, intermediates and experts. We're really proud to be the venue for events of this sort, and look forward to hosting more," said Shire President Wade DeCampo.
Australia Day celebrations kick-off with a breakfast at Pemberton Pool from 8am - 10am, followed by the Premier's Australia Day Active Citizenship Award Ceremony which will run until midday. "The awards are a highlight on the Shire's calendar, as community members and groups who make valuable contributions to our region, get recognition for their time and devotion," said Cr DeCampo. Following a midday sausage sizzle, there are activities for the whole family which include the wood turning, a mini railway, tram rides and bath tub races.
Cr DeCampo urges people to come along and celebrate our country with their fellow community members, saying "the day will finish off with a dusk concert at the Pemberton Pool from 4pm - 8pm. It's a spectacular time of the day and will be the perfect way to relax into the celebrations - sit back and toast how lucky we are in Australia, and in our beautiful region."
In addition, the Pemberton Arts Group are displaying an exhibition which includes works from the Shire of Manjimup collection, which was founded upon a philanthropic donation of artworks by Sir Claude Hotchin. The exhibition runs from 16 January through until 29 January at the Pemberton Sports Club, daily from 10am -5pm.
"We are honoured that the Pemberton Arts Group are displaying our collection in this way, for the purpose for which Sir Claude Hotchin originally intended - to provide regional people with exposure to some of the best visual arts practices that occurred in WA at the time, and to encourage enjoyment and participation in the arts, support for visual artists and to raise the general level of cultural appreciation of the audience," said Cr DeCampo.
