Shire of Manjimup Rangers have received many complaints during recent weeks regarding dogs in our community, so they would like to advise dog owners of their responsibilities and the laws that are associated with animal control.
Being a responsible pet owner begins even before choosing your pet. When choosing that energetic, loving puppy, consider if your yard is secure and there is adequate shelter. No matter the breed and size, dogs need exercise. You need to ask yourself whether you are prepared to walk your dog every day. Consider your lifestyle and the place in which you live.
Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Registration - It is a legal requirement that all dogs over three months of age are registered. This assists in reuniting lost pets with their owners quickly, dogs must wear both their registration tag and an identification tag at all times.
Microchipping - All dogs over the age of three months of age must be microchipped prior to registration.
Change of Details / Ownership - If there is a change of ownership, your contact details or your animal dies, you must notify the Shire and Microchip agency.
Dog Control and Fencing - If you own a dog you have a legal responsibility to keep it under control either within a fenced area on your property or on a leash when in public, unless in a designated 'Dog Exercise Area'. Dogs wandering or not held on a leash when in public areas are a major concern. Everyone is entitled to walk in the neighbourhood without being harassed or attacked by uncontrolled and often quite frightening dogs. Rangers will be issuing fines and impounding any dog that is found wandering within the community.
Dog Attacks -The Shire of Manjimup takes all reported dog attacks seriously. If your dog attacks a person, or another animal, you will be held responsible even if you are not present at the time. A person who has been attacked may also take civil legal action for any injury or damage. A dog attack includes a dog aggressively rushing at, or attempting to attack a person or animal, as well as tearing clothing, biting or causing physical injury. Dependant on the severity of the attack, modified penalties may be issued and the dog may be declared dangerous or legal action instigated.
If you or your dog are involved in a dog attack, seek the appropriate veterinary/medical assistance, then contact Ranger and Emergency Services immediately on 9771 7777.
Dogs Causing Nuisance - It is your responsibility to ensure that your dog is not creating a public nuisance by barking excessively. All dogs bark, but excessive barking is one of the most disruptive neighbourhood issues. Nuisance abatement notices may be issued if your dog is found to be excessively barking.
Removal of Dog Faeces - Dog faeces is a source of annoyance to other users of footpaths and recreation areas. Please respect others by collecting your dog's faeces and disposing of it correctly. The Shire of Manjimup provides 'poo bags' in a number of public places. Your yard at home should also be cleaned daily to reduce health related problems.
