Get skating down to Manjin Park from 10am on Saturday 21 April 2018 to join in the festivities of Youth Week and celebrate the official opening of the Manjin Rec Plaza. The Shire of Manjimup Youth Network will conduct this free #SO_MY_FEST event. The day will feature a range of interactive workshops, fun activities, live music, food and information stalls. The Shire will also be hosting a skateboarding WA workshop at the newly completed Manjin Rec Plaza.
In addition to the Skateboarding WA workshop, activities will include a reptile trailer, mosaicing, and graffiti workshop, DJ Rob V, BMX jam and scooter jam. Free buses will be running to the event from surrounding towns.
The youth festival, has been working its way around different towns over the last four years. Celebrations have already taken place in Pemberton, Walpole, Quinninup, and Northcliffe with Manjimup being the feature town for 2018. "One third of our local population is classified as youth, which is the age group of 12 -25 year olds. They are our future and this event is about engaging them, as well as acknowledging, appreciating and celebrating the valuable contribution they make in all of our communities," said Shire President Paul Omodei.
This year the festival is extra special as it incorporates the official opening of the long awaited Manjin Rec Plaza."The rec plaza is a major piece of the Town Centre Revitalisation Project and has been a very long time on the drawing board for Manjimup's youth. The rec plaza has become an extremely popular meeting place for our youth since opening to the public in late February 2018, it is tremendous to see the activity and hear the buzz of our youth enjoying their plaza after school and on weekends" added Cr Omodei.
Made possible by funding from Royalties for Regions, Lotterywest and the Shire the rec plaza delivers a multipurpose skating facility for skaters, BMX riders and scooter riders and acknowledges the diversity of current user styles, the design incorporates a number of different rideable elements and features to provide continued progression for beginners through to experienced users. The official opening ceremony will commence at 11am.
