Safer town centre on the horizon
The Shire of Manjimup has been successful in securing a grant for $307,085 in round two of the Safer Communities Fund. The funds will be used for the Manjimup Town Centre Safety Enhancement Project, which incorporates closed circuit television throughout Manjin Park, the Manjimup Heritage Park, and Brockman Street with a direct linkage to the Manjimup Police Station, and safety and lighting improvements to the Manjimup Heritage Park.
The Safer Communities Fund (SCF) - Round two supports the Australian Government's commitment to deliver safer communities by boosting the efforts of local councils and community organisations to address crime and anti-social behaviour by funding crime prevention initiatives.
The funding will see
- the replacement of 13 old cameras within the town centre of Manjimup, which are not compliant with the 2015 WA State CCTV Strategy, to allow real time access to the local police station;
- the installation of 34 CCTV cameras, 33 solar light bollards and 28 overhead security lights throughout the Manjimup Heritage Park,; and
- the installation of 2 access control gates to allow easy access for emergency services at the Manjimup Heritage Park, whilst controlling non-authorised access into the Park.
Shire President Paul Omodei is extremely pleased with the successful grant application We couldn't be happier with the outcome of the application, improvements to safety and the reduction of crime is a genuine concern for the Shire. These new cameras will transmit high quality real time images to the Manjimup Police Station and could be a useful as evidence in incidents.
The improvements to lighting and access at the Manjimup Heritage Park will encourage people to safely explore the numerous and unique attractions of the 10 hectare park, and could enable the future removal of the boundary fencing Cr Omodei added.
The project totalling $450,182 follows the Shire Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan which outlines a key partnership between the Shire of Manjimup, police, business and community to address criminal issues and will run concurrently with stage two of the Town Centre Revitalisation Project with an expected completion date in late 2019.
