SEED presents a new variety of Growing Science Forum
MEDIA RELEASE - SEED presents a new variety of Growing Science Forum
August 2016
The Royalties for Regions funded Southern Forests SEED Program held its annual Growing Science Forum on Tuesday 16 August, featuring keynote speaker Professor Tim Flannery; acclaimed scientist, explorer and conservationist. The forum took on a new format in 2016, with the high school student session being held during the day, and a special evening session for community members.
The theme for the 2016 Growing Science Forum is Food Security and Climate Change. Professor Flannery presented a straightforward and powerful exploration of the connection between climate change, global warming and human activity. The day-time student session also featured additional guest speakers, Professor Lyn Beazley, Murdoch University animal scientist Dr Peter McGilchrist and Curtin University PhD marine science student Sarah Marley.
"The change of format and new guest speakers kept this event fresh," said Shire President Wade DeCampo. "Having two sessions enabled more students to attend during the day, whilst the evening session will made it much easier for community members to attend, particularly those who are unable to during business hours."
This year also saw the addition of both University and TAFE trade stalls during the lunch break of the Growing Science Forum. "This sort of 'tertiary road show' for students is something that our youth don't often get to experience; it was the perfect opportunity for our local students to get some insight into what science courses are on offer in Western Australia," said Cr DeCampo.
"The SEED program is about nurturing the link between local students, producers and education institutions," explained Cr DeCampo. "By exposing our local students to the opportunities available to them in agriculture and science, the SEED program will hopefully open doors for them that they never knew existed."
Both sessions of the Growing Science Forum were held at the Manjimup Repertory Club.
