Timber Museum Restoration
Media Release: State Timber Museum Refurbishment to Commence
July 2017
Council, at its most recent meeting, awarded the contract for the State Timber Museum Refurbishment to a highly qualified design/build team led by Suzanne Hunt Architect in the lead up to the museums 40th anniversary.
The State Timber Museum, built in 1977, has been closed for a number of years as the exhibition is dated, objects were not secure and were subject to theft, and the building was deteriorating. The refurbishment project includes building works and exhibition design and implementation including a new industry worker memorial.
"Suzanne Hunt Architect are very proud to be lead consultant on this collaboration between Interpretation Designers Creative Spaces, CLPM, Plan E, Stephen Carrick and the Shire of Manjimup for this wonderful project. Personally I am really excited to be bringing this iconic Marshall Clifton designed building back to life for the next century and creating a state of the art Interpretation Centre and Memorial for the community" said Suzanne Hunt.
Shire President Paul Omodei stated that "Capturing the timber industry's role in Western Australia, including the shaping of the towns within the Shire of Manjimup, is an important piece of the history which will be preserved in the restoration of the unique building that houses the timber museum".
Planning and design work is due to commence in the coming month. During this process the Shire of Manjimup will be seeking community members that can contribute to the content development of the new Museum displays.
"The communities input into the new displays is welcome and necessary to accurately represent the industry's rich history," said Cr Omodei.
