Town Centre Revitalisation - stage two GO AHEAD!
MEDIA RELEASE - $22.3 million for Manjimup
May 2016
The Hon. Terry Redman MLA visited Manjimup today to officially announce $22.3 million of Royalties for Regions funding, which will see stage two of the Town Centre Revitalisation Project fulfilled. This funding was allocated in the State Budget that was released on Thursday, 12 May 2016.
Shire President Wade DeCampo said he was thrilled at the announcement and is particularly impressed that the State has recognised the opportunities and potential of the town and the region with the injection of cash to enable projects like this to go ahead. "Our town and region is already growing, it is already vibrant and it is already attractive, but stage two of the revitalisation will see Manjimup transformed into an investment ready, regional centre. The level of optimism and confidence is going to soar," said Cr DeCampo.
In 2015, the Shire of Manjimup submitted a business case to the State Government, seeking funding under the Royalties for Regions 'Growing our South' initiative, for the elements of the Town Centre Revitalisation project that weren't funded in stage one.
Both stages of the Town Centre Revitalisation project are based on the Manjimup Townsite Growth Plan, which was originally developed to conceptually direct transformational and sustainable economic outcomes in Manjimup and the greater region. There are eight different elements to the project, some of which have already been completed in stage one. "It took a lot of stakeholder engagement to get the growth plan right," explained Cr DeCampo. "We had community, Local and State Government involvement, because a key component of the document is addressing how we ensure that the town can accommodate the social demands of a population increase - we're talking about health providers, education providers, retail opportunities along with activities that create a vibrant community - we all needed to be in on this together, right from the outset, and that approach is part of the reason why we've been successful in securing this funding," added Cr DeCampo.
Completion of stage two will require an additional $8.17 million to be sourced from other funding providers including the Shire, bringing the total cost for stage two to $30.46 million and the total project cost (stage one and two) to $36.432 million.
