National Reconciliation Week, held from the 27th of May to 3rd June, is a time to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements. The theme for 2023 is 'Be a Voice for Generations'. This theme is an encouragement for all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives – where we live, work and socialise.
Manjimup Shire President Paul Omodei said “Reconciliation Week is an important time to acknowledge the shared history of Australia, to celebrate the oldest continuing culture in the world, and show respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, so that we can move forward together”.
National Reconciliation Week marks two significant dates in our reconciliation journey. On the 27th of May 1967 over 90 per cent of Australians voted YES in a referendum to change the constitution to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Census and be counted as Australians.
The 3rd of June is known as Mabo Day as this is the day the Australian High Court delivered the Mabo decision, following Eddie Mabo’s challenge of the term ‘terra nullius’ which led to the legal recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land.
The Shire of Manjimup will be hosting a Breakfast from 7:30am – 10am on the 25th of May 2023, joining a live broadcasting from Boola Bardip WA Museum from 8:00am, with a special performance by a local choir singing ‘From Little Things Big Things Grow’ by Paul Kelly and Kev Carmody. Online registrations are required for this free event at https://somnrw.eventbrite.com.au for catering, please RSVP by 4:00pm, Monday 22 May 2023
