Cattle Trails pays homage to the many families who, on horseback, drove their cattle to the coast for annual summer grazing. Whilst this was a necessary part of the annual grazing pattern, it was also a way of life which children and adults alike held dear. The memories of those days are an intrinsic part of the folklore of our district.
There are still several roads across the Shire, which today still follow those same droving routes.
We would roll out the swags, fish for marron in nearby waterways, providing a good feed and supplementing our supplies; often the highlight of our trip. As darkness closed in and the twilight faded, we'd smell the campfire smoke, and we'd hear the faint sounds of our cows' bells as we drifted off to sleep. (A stockman's reflection)
