MEDIA RELEASE - Shire celebrations for National Youth Week 2015
April 2015
The Shire of Manjimup's Youth Network is once again joining forces with the Department of Local Government and Communities, Local Drug Action Groups, the Water Corporation, Country Arts WA and Healthway, to host the annual celebration of youth to coincide with National Youth Week.Themed 'Drug Aware - It starts with us', this year's FREE youth festival is being held at Pemberton Park in Pemberton from midday until 6pm on Saturday 18 April 2015.
National Youth week, which in 2015 runs from 10-19 April, is an annual celebration of the positive contributions of young people to Western Australian communities.
"This year's local festival gives youth from across the Shire the opportunity to express themselves and showcase their talents, and will feature a range of activities that promote and raise awareness of good health and good times, without the use of drugs," said Shire President Wade DeCampo.
Activities include zorb balls, a ninja challenge, bungee run, inflatable water slide, pizza making, drumming, face painting, circus skills and a jaws of life display.
Cr DeCampo, a strong advocate for the prevention and elimination of drug use in the community, explained "the take-home message for youth is that you can get your heart racing, have a good laugh and enjoy time with your mates, and still be looking after your health by saying no to drugs."
"The youth from each of our youth zones are involved in the organisation of the event, and by promoting the message 'It starts with us', they're setting a great example of how important it is to look out for one another," said Cr DeCampo.
Free bus transport is being offered from Manjimup, Northcliffe, Quinninup and Walpole, and can be booked by contacting Sharon Wilkinson at the Shire of Manjimup on 9771 7752.
