Australian native fungi will take centre stage at a new exhibition opening at the Manjimup Art Gallery on 19 August 2021. The Fantastic Fungi photographic exhibition is a collaboration between the Manjimup Photo Club and the Gallery and will feature photographs selected from the Club’s 2021 Fantastic Fungi Competition.
The Manjimup Photo Club has been staging an annual photography competition, featuring examples of the hundreds of species of fungi growing in the South West Region and other parts of Australia, since 2018. The competition includes three Classes - Open (any age), 16 Years and Under and 12 Years and Under.
The exhibition will feature some 25 photographs selected from the Open Class and five each from the 16 Years and Under and 12 Years and Under Classes. A scrolling digital display of the remaining images will also form part of the exhibition.
Fungi can fruit throughout the year, however, it is during the Autumn and Winter months that they are found in abundance in the area thanks to a combination of increased rainfall and ample forest litter. The recent wetter months have provided photographers with the opportunity to wander through our local forests to view and photograph a wide variety of fungi magically appearing in soil, litter, logs and trees.
‘The images will delight visitors of all ages with their uniqueness and exquisite beauty’, said Shire President, Paul Omodei.
Fantasic Fungi will be on display at the Manjimup Art Gallery from 19 August to 22 September 2021.
