Premier and Minister invited to address timber workers

Manjimup Shire President Paul Omodei has today written a letter inviting the Premier Honourable Mark McGowan MLA and the Honourable Dave Kelly, Minister for Forestry, to visit the Shire and address the local community following the announcement of the cessation of native forest logging in WA on Wednesday last week.

The State Government recently announced the cessation of native forest harvesting effective from 2024 when a new Forest Management Plan (FMP) is introduced. Set to take effect from 2024, except for two tier karri forests which will be immediately protected.

Shire President Paul Omodei stated “We had no idea this decision was coming until shortly before the announcement, we are inviting the Premier and Minister to address the concerns of the community and we are keen to commence discussions between the industry, unions and the community to ensure a fair and equitable transition package for all workers and businesses impacted by this decision”.

“The native forestry (including ancillary and support services) is still one of our largest industries and employers in the Shire district and this decision is likely to have massive implications on our communities. We are not alone with other Local Government districts in the South West also significantly impacted” he added.

The Shire President’s letter is expected to reach the Premier’s office early next week.
