Shire of Manjimup and Walpole Primary School are the winners of the Upper Primary School category of the Western Australian Local Government #shoWcAse in Pixels competition for 2021. The competition winners were announced at the 2021 WA Local Government Convention and Exhibition, which attracts more than 600 Local Government representatives and over 100 suppliers to the sector.
The annual #shoWcAse in Pixels competition has categories open to primary and
secondary schools, community groups and professional and digital artists. The competition is run by the WA Local Government Association as part of its annual Convention held this year at Crown Perth.
#shoWcAse in pixels has recently evolved from a display of physical “Banners in the Terrace” in the Perth CBD to a digital screening at the Yagan square tower screen.
WALGA Chief Executive Officer Nick Sloan said the artworks received this year illustrated the landscapes and stories of communities in each Local Government.
The theme for this year was “Leading the Way” and Walpole Primary School students used air dried clay and organic pigments to create an image of the highway leading the way to the internationally acclaimed Walpole Wilderness.
Walpole, located within the Shire of Manjimup is an untouched landscape of ancient, magnificent Karri, Jarrah and Tingle forests, tranquil rivers and wetlands, peaceful national parks, striking granite peaks and sheer coastal cliffs that overlook the Southern Ocean.
The population of Walpole and districts is less than 500 residents, yet more than 250,000 tourists visit the area each year to be surrounded by nature.
Shire President Paul Omodei said the “The Shire, in conjunction with one of our local schools, submits an entry to the competition every year, we are very proud of Walpole Primary School taking out the upper primary category and congratulate all the students for their outstanding contribution to the Western Australian Local Government #shoWcAse competition”.
“The trophy will be presented to Council at the next meeting and the prize presented to the Walpole Primary School by the South Ward Councillor in coming weeks.”
