The breakfast, held at the Wellness and Respite Community Centre on Thursday 25 May 2023, was opened by Deputy Shire President, Denise Jenkins who spoke about the importance of being a voice for reconciliation in our everyday lives and workplaces. Wayne Herdigan also welcomed everyone to Bibulmun Country.
The State Virtual Breakfast for National Reconciliation Week was live broadcast from Boola Bardip WA Museum with a beautiful Welcome to Whadjuk Country by Aunty Robyn Collard. Following the keynote address by Noongar, Yamatji and Wongi man, Ken Wyatt AM, and other presenters, our local Reconciliation Choir sang ‘From Little Things Big Things Grow’ by Paul Kelly and Kev Carmody, as part of the National ‘Voices for Generations’ initiative.
The Noongar Seasons: Nature in Transition exhibition is opening at the Manjimup Art Gallery during Reconciliation Week, on 1 June 2023, and closing with NAIDOC week on 8 July 2023. Noongar artists have submitted works depicting one of the six Noongar seasons of Birak, Bunuru, Djeran, Makaru, Djilba, and Kambarang and the six winning works will become banners for the main street of Manjimup.
Manjimup Shire President Paul Omodei said “Reconciliation Week is an important time to acknowledge the shared history of Australia, to celebrate the oldest continuing culture in the world, and show respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, so that we can move forward together”.
The Manjimup Shire also participated in the Reconciliation Week Street Banner Program, with banners sponsored by businesses and organisations displayed in Manjimup, Pemberton, Northcliffe and Walpole featuring ‘Jartuti’ the work of Beverley Rogers, one of the Martumili Artists from the Great Sandy Desert and Rudall River Regions of Western Australia.
