Floor Rectification Plans at Balang Miya Community Hub
At the Ordinary Council meeting held 27 July 2023, council resolved to allocate an additional $70,000 to complete floor rectification works in the RSL Building in Pemberton.
As is often the case when renovating older buildings, they do not reveal the full story of their decline until boards are lifted and spaces inspected. A number of factors including moisture levels and material deterioration have contributed to the need for the sub-flooring rectification works to be completed to avert problems developing in future and to maximise the longevity of the building.
The COVID period highlighted the importance of taking a long view in relation to building construction and renovations. The additional works, which are expected to take three months will delay the Pemberton Visitor Centre (PVC) and Community Resource Centre’s (CRC) move into the complex. This is unfortunate, however, both organisations will benefit in the longer term from a space that offers a new, functional accommodation option for many years to come. Both the PVC and PCRC will remain at their current location until the rectification works have been completed.
The new works will not affect the relocation into the complex by other community groups. The Pemberton Arts and the Heritage and History Groups have already commenced their move into their new fit-for-purpose spaces in the Hub. The Pemberton RSL is meeting in the complex’s new conference room and the Library has been welcoming back readers since reopening in early June.
Once floor rectification works begin in coming weeks, access to the Library will be via its side door or the back door to the complex. Signs will be posted to guide visitors.
There is no doubt that the delay caused by the need for additional works is disappointing, however, it needs to be balanced against the benefits that include renewing and extending the life of a building that holds important significance to the town.
