Reflections, a new exhibition, featuring the work of local artist, Gwen Jefferyes, will open at the Manjimup Art Gallery on 8 April 2024.
For Gwen, painting has always been a form of creative therapy, an opportunity to step back from a full and busy life as a spouse, mother and teacher, to take a breath and capture the beauty of the environment that surrounds her.
Nature in her neighbourhood has been a constant source of inspiration, providing tranquil landscapes and a constantly varying palette of both muted and vibrant colours as the seasons change.
After graduating from Claremont Teacher’s College in 1949, Gwen taught in primary and high schools in Norseman, Manjimup and Pemberton. She married, fellow teacher, Ben Jefferyes in 1954 and settled in Pump Hill near Pemberton.
Gwen’s teaching roles and the raising of four children left little time for painting, however, when opportunities arose and time permitted, she attended workshops and contributed to local art exhibitions. It was her life experiences coupled with the beauty of the area that generated a flow of new ideas and encouraged her, in her 60’s, to begin painting with renewed enthusiasm.
Now in her 90’s, Gwen continues to create. Her familiarity with and appreciation for places close to her heart including the Cascades, Donnelly Beach, the Rainbow Trail and Windy Harbour, are beautifully represented in small, exquisite artworks that capture moments of quiet tranquility.
Reflections will be on display from 8 April until 17 May 2024.
