Koondarm Wangkiny or Dream Telling is the name of a new exhibition at the Manjimup Art Gallery showcasing the work of Noongar artists, Megan Corby and Graham ‘Swag’ Taylor.
Megan Corby is a Bunbury-based self-taught emerging artist. Her work is a fusion of traditional and contemporary elements resulting in works that provide a sense of peace and harmony. Her colour palette ranges from soft pastels to more vibrant hues reflecting Australia’s diverse landscape and coastline. Megan has travelled extensively throughout Australia and paints places and moments that hold a special place in her heart. Daydreaming about the past and present inspires her work and gives expression to her culture and story.
Swag Taylor is an established Perth-based, Noongar artist. He grew up around the Kellerberrin area and developed a love of the bush. Its birds, animals, colours and textures are often reflected in his work. As an artist, Swag is largely self-taught. In his teens, he spent time with senior Noongar artists and would watch and listen as they painted. Swag’s art style is reminiscent of the Carrolup school of the South West of Western Australia.
This joint exhibition is an opportunity to celebrate the work of these artists as they continue the important Indigenous tradition of visual storytelling.
Koondarm Wangkiny will be on display at the Manjimup Art Gallery, Corner Rose and Mount Streets from 7 June until 5 July 2024.
