Childcare Shortage a Barrier to Workforce Participation
The Shire of Manjimup acknowledges the significant challenge of long childcare waiting lists in Manjimup and across regional Western Australia. This lack of access to childcare disproportionately impacts employees, particularly women, returning to work after maternity leave and is a key consideration for families relocating to the region with young children.
Shire President Donelle Buegge expresses strong concern: "The limited availability of childcare is a critical barrier to attracting and retaining skilled professionals our community needs. Doctors, nurses, teachers, and other essential workers are struggling to find childcare, hindering our ability to deliver vital services and address cost-of-living pressures."
The current situation creates a ripple effect, impacting not only families but also local businesses and government agencies struggling to recruit due to a lack of childcare options. With the closure of the remaining home-based daycare center looming, waiting lists are only expected to grow.
The Shire is committed to finding solutions. In collaboration with key stakeholders, we invite interested community members to a forum to discuss and develop strategies to improve childcare services in Manjimup.
