State Government Announces Allowing Extended Use of Temporary Accommodation on Private Land
The Shire of Manjimup has jumped into action following last week’s State Government announcement to extend the use of temporary accommodation on private land.
As part of changes to the Caravan Parks and Camping Grounds Regulations 1997, from 1 September 2024 local governments can authorise the use of caravans or Tiny Homes on Wheels as temporary accommodation for up to two years, with the possibility of renewal. Previously, approvals were limited to just three months.
The Shire of Manjimup is aware of the desperate need for alternative housing arrangements due to the current housing crisis, and supports the State Government’s decision to amend regulations to help ease the burden.
The Shire is currently developing a policy to guide the requirements for these new approvals for temporary accommodation, which is anticipated to be considered by Council at the October Council meeting.
Shire President Donelle Buegge welcomed the new regulations: “The implications of the new regulations are widespread, from reducing the stress of the housing crisis to potentially elevating illegal camping of agricultural workers at peak periods. Shire staff will now work on developing policy to clarify what these new regulations mean.”
