Now and Then is a retrospective of Anna Czerkasow’s extensive artistic career. It traces Anna’s creative progression through a range of styles, media and subjects, clearly demonstrating that her passion for creating and experimenting has never wavered.
Post World War II Ukrainian refugees, Anna’s parents left Europe and arrived in Fremantle in 1951, eventually settling in Melville where Anna was born in 1952. After completing a Diploma of Teaching, majoring in Visual and Language Arts, Anna relocated to Northcliffe in 1983 to take up a teaching position with the District High School. She remained at the school for most of her career and it was her Specialist Art Teacher role and joining a small group of Pemberton TAFE students that rekindled her interest in pursuing her own creative talents.
This retrospective pays tribute to Anna’s wide and diverse body of work. When creating, Anna seeks to capture the light, atmosphere or essence of the subject. She draws on nature and life experiences for inspiration and converts them into pieces that vary from tranquil and ethereal to bold and unflinching.
Anna has been an art teacher, mentor and the mainstay of the local Pemberton Arts Group. These roles have, at times, obscured her own practice as an artist. Now and Then remedies this by showcasing her work over a three decade artistic career.
Now and Then will be on display at the Manjimup Art Gallery from 9 November until 14 December 2024.
