The first soil has been turned to commence construction works of the South West Energy Experience. This contemporary entrance statement building will complete the Manjimup Heritage Park transformation, as part of the Manjimup Town Centre Revitalisation Stage Two.
A sod turning ceremony was held on Monday 5 November 2018 in the Manjimup Heritage Park to celebrate the commencement of the construction phase of the South West Energy Experience (SWEE). The official proceedings will be held by the Hon Rick Wilson MP - Federal Member for O'Connor.
The South West Energy Experience is a joint funded project between the Australia Government through the Building Better Regions Fund, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (Royalties for Regions), and the Shire of Manjimup. This new multipurpose world class facility will incorporate a unique museum, caf and visitor servicing centre. The location and contemporary design of the building will become the new gateway to Manjimup, enticing visitors to the town and further into the region.
The museum will showcase the history of energy in Western Australia, through modern exhibitions, engaging displays and interactive building features, providing educational and interpretative experiences for all visitors.
The SWEE will serve not only to protect, but to interpret and promote local and national heritage and culture. Through excellence in design, state of the art interpretative content, contemporary curatorial practice and sound local involvement, the SWEE will foster the community's sense of cultural pride and aims to embed a sustainable energy ethos into locals and visitors to the region and importantly provide an education experience for children of all ages.
Objects big and small will be on display such as; early model electric kitchen appliances to original Bellis and Morcom Electricity Generator set once use at the Pemberton Saw Mill.
The construction of this new facility will be undertaken by Civilcon (WA) Pty Ltd, a south west builder, and is expected to be opened in December 2019.
Shire President Paul Omodei said that he is "excited to see the construction works commencing on the South West Energy Experience. This is the final project in a 3.5 year stage two of the town centre revitalisation. The development will be the 'cherry on top' for the revitalisation. The facility, adjacent to our new northern townsite entry, will attract visitors to our town centre and increase overnight stay".
