Whilst road side verges around the state may be littered by unsightly rubbish and have you "on the verge of tears" as one reader of The West Australian Newspaper wrote, if you visit the Shire of Manjimup you will see a virtually litter free highway stretching for approximately 200 kilometres, from Palgarup in the north of the Shire 140 kilometres south to Walpole and then another 60 kilometres on to Denmark.
One tireless 75 year old Keep Australia Beautiful Volunteer maintains the litter free highway three days a fortnight. "Michael Filby has been picking up our rubbish for nearly 17 years", said Shire President Paul Omodei "He is a legend in our eyes, and keeps our number one highway looking fresh, so you can enjoy the view when you meander through our region sampling our wonderful fresh produce, taking in our majestic forests and visiting our spectacular rugged coastline".
The Southern Forests Region is about 307km from Perth in the beautiful southwest corner of Western Australia. A corner where you will never run out of things to do.
"Not all highways have such a dedicated volunteer as we do. The highways traversing our great State are State Government assets, the State Government however, are reluctant to provide resources for the clearing of roadside litter, despite their 3 billion dollar surplus and many of these highways don't even have rubbish bins at the pull in bays", Mr Omodei added.
