North Walpole Road Tree Clearing
November 2017
The Shire of Manjimup 2017/2018 works budget includes the widening of a 1 km stretch of North Walpole Road. The road reconstruction includes a 6 metre seal, 1 metre shoulder on both sides, line marking and drainage upgrades to ensure the road complies with Main Roads WA Standards. A vegetation clearing permit has been granted by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation allowing for a total of 1.9 ha (approximately 16 trees) to be removed. The Shire expects to remove no more than 10 trees.
Shire President Paul Omodei explained "Road work will be commencing some 100m north east of the Highway centre line, avoiding any works required in the 'road reserve triangle bounded by South West Highway and North Walpole Road, and extending about 1 km further along the road.
"Funding has been provided by Main Roads WA for the upgrade of the road on the basis of road safety, due to poor geometry, sight distances and types of vehicles utilising the road, including heavy haulage and use by cyclists and pedestrians using the Bibbulmun Track and Munda Biddi Trial, added Cr Omodei
Currently the Vegetation Clearing Permit is under the appeal process with the closing date for submissions 29 November 2017.
